Manager, Environmental Sustainability

Position Summary:

The Environmental Sustainability Manager is responsible to make progress on LifeLabs ongoing commitment to minimize the environmental impacts of our operations and services and focus on reducing pollution, waste generation and consumption of resources. This role reports to the Director of Health, Safety & Environmental Sustainability, and will have the responsibility for the development, implementation, and ongoing management of national environmental programs to effectively manage risk to the business.  This role will also be responsible for implementing new technologies and frameworks for supporting LifeLabs Environmental Policy, managing data aligned to the GRI, providing recommendations for sustainability goals and supporting the business in Ontario, BC, and Saskatchewan.  



  • Build and maintain comprehensive knowledge of environmental sustainability initiatives and programs across the Company
  • Serve as “go to” expert on emerging trends, frameworks, industry benchmarks, and issues in environmental sustainability sector
  • Collect and analyze company-wide data/ metrics for analysis and reporting against goals and targets to measure Company performance with respect to environmental impact
  • Communicate and promote environmental sustainability initiatives and programs
  • Manage and coach the environmental sustainability team
  • Oversee the collection of wastewater, indoor air quality and other environmental sampling and comparing results against regulations and/or permitting requirements
  • Coordinate environmental spill response
  • Manage and promote the continuous improvement of the national hazardous waste (biohazardous and chemical) and recycling programs
  • Manage the internal environmental management system
  • Manage the chemical safety/ SDS program
  • Support LifeLabs in building a culture of sustainability by engaging employees and leadership to build awareness and participation in sustainability activities
  • Engage constantly with all levels of the organization
  • Support Health & Safety programs and initiatives as required



  • Education: BSc or MS Degree in Environmental Science
  • Minimum 8-10 years of comparable experience
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated success building relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to interact effectively and influence change in a client-centered and patient focused organization
  • Demonstrated excellent facilitation, presentation, letter and proposal writing abilities
  • Experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and leading cross-functional projects
  • Proven ability to manage many competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to motivate and engage employees
  • Strong analytical, research, project management and evaluation skills
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated ability to budget planning, and project management
  • Solid understanding of sustainability and environmental practices
  • Some knowledge and experience working with health and safety programs
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time
