The Genetic Counsellor will be an integral part of the clinical team and be significantly involved in service development and delivery, as well as counselling, education and training. The Genetic Counsellor works cross-functionally with members of the Genetic Lab Operations, Medical Science, and Business Development teams.

 

Through their expertise, they will support LifeLabs Genetics’ full suite of genetic testing products. We anticipate the responsibilities of this position to evolve as the Genetics Service grows. Bilingual candidates will be preferred. This is a temporary, part time  position, has the potential to be remote and may require some travel.

 

Accountabilities:

 

  • Coordinates and manages the NIPT portfolio nationally
  • Reviews laboratory results and acts as information source for ordering clinicians
  • Assists clinicians in interpreting results in the context of clinical patient data
  • Researches current medical literature to ensure accuracy of reporting and assists in writing customized reports
  • Provides information to clients (clinicians, genetic counsellors and the general public) on the full range of tests
  • Provides guidance and direction to laboratory staff on results reporting
  • Contributes to team initiatives to ensure the efficient delivery of molecular diagnostic services
  • Develops educational tools to promote and support new test development as well as existing menu offerings
  • Acts as subject matter expert to develop content of marketing material
  • Participates in educational and promotional events
  • Identifies appropriate patient and clinician resources
  • Collaborates with other LifeLabs divisional staff for implementation and execution of new tests
  • Maintains medical knowledge through continuing education (rounds, journal clubs and scientific meetings)
  • Provides future supervision and education to trainees (CCMG trainees, residents, fellows and GCs)

 

 

Requirements:

 

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Genetic Counselling program
  • Certified or eligible for certification by the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) and/or the American Board of Genetic Counselling (ABGC)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a Genetic Counselling role, either clinical or within a molecular diagnostic lab (a combination of both is preferred)
  • Clinical experience in prenatal genetics and cancer genetics preferred
  • Proficiency with online resources such as PubMed, OMIM, Medline, and mutational databases
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of traditional and newer/emerging technologies used in molecular genetic analysis
  • Extensive knowledge of the molecular and hereditary basis of genetic disorders
  • Solid understanding of technical and interpretive aspects of a wide range of molecular diagnostic assays
