This is a 6-month Contract & a Part-Time position, working any number of hours up to a maximum of 30 hours per week.

 

The Genetic Counsellor will be an integral part of the clinical team at LifeLabs Genetics and be significantly involved in service development and delivery, as well as counselling, education and training. The Genetic Counsellor works cross-functionally with members of the Genetic Lab Operations, Medical Science, and Business Development teams.

 

Through their expertise, they will support LifeLabs Genetics’ full suite of genetic testing products. We anticipate the responsibilities of this position to evolve as the Genetics Service grows. This position has the potential to be remote and may require some travel, when permitted.

 

Accountabilities:

  • Works closely with the Genetics team, including laboratory operations, to ensure efficient delivery and communication of NIPT and other genetic testing results
  • Provides clinical counselling to patients to help them make informed medical and personal decisions, relating to certain tests in the LifeLabs Genetics portfolio
  • Reviews laboratory results and acts as information source for ordering clinicians
  • Assists clinicians in interpreting results in the context of clinical patient data
  • Provides information to clients (clinicians, genetic counsellors and the general public) on the full range of tests
  • Supports the development of  educational tools to promote and support new test development as well as existing menu offerings
  • Acts as subject matter expert to develop content of marketing material
  • Participates in educational and promotional events, which includes but is not limited to presenting at hospital rounds, journal clubs and academic conferences
  • Leads or supports the maintenance and/or building of professional collaborations within the genetics field
  • Supports projects to increase business growth within the Genetics strategy
  • Identifies appropriate patient and clinician resources
  • Collaborates with other LifeLabs divisional staff for implementation and execution of new tests
  • Maintains medical knowledge through continuing education (rounds, journal clubs and scientific meetings)

 

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Genetic Counselling program
  • Certified or eligible for certification by the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) (American Board of Genetic Counselling (ABGC) certification will be considered)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a Genetic Counselling role (prenatal and cancer an asset)
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual (written and spoken English and French) preferred but non-bilingual candidates will be considered
