The Labour Relations Consultant will be responsible for advising, educating and supporting managers and supervisors on HR/LR related matters including the consistent interpretation and administration of LifeLabs Collective Agreements. Reporting to the Manager, Labour Relations, s/he will promote and support ongoing compliance and interpretation of LifeLabs policies, procedures and collective agreements as well as relevant federal and provincial legislation. 

 

In partnership with the HR Business Partners and HR Consultants, this role will participate in the development and communication of the organization employee/labour relations policies and programs while promoting a positive employer/employee relationship. 

 

Core Accountabilities: 

  • Advises and supports client group on all HR/LR related matters, including the consistent interpretation of LifeLabs Collective Agreements 
  • Advises and coaches client groups to assist in resolving employee relations/labour relations matters including consistent interpretation and application of policies, programs, and the collective agreement. 
  • Investigates and reports on complex employee relation matters including allegations of harassment, discrimination, and violence in the workplace.
  • Supports ongoing training and development activities for managers and supervisors related to Employee/Labour Relations activities
  • Administers performance management and progressive discipline processes, counsels’ managers in appropriate techniques
  • Works closely with HRBPs and HRCs to facilitate organizational change by ensuring the Unions are informed of relevant changes.
  • Assists in the development and adaptation of HR/LR training programs as required
  • Provides advice to managers/team leaders and employees regarding relevant Collective Agreements and employment legislation. 
  • Keeps abreast of relevant legislation and legal trends related to Labour Relations and Human Resources. 
  • Research labour relations policies and processes and provides recommendations regarding the enhancement of existing policies or the development of new policies
  • Maintains effective working relationships with union representatives in BC 
  • Coordinates and attends Labour Management meetings in B.C., prepares and distributes agenda and minutes and supports Operations leadership in providing thorough and timely follow-up to issues raised
  • Handles grievances at all levels of the grievance procedure. 
  • Conduct investigations, negotiation and resolution of disputes related to grievances as step one between employee and Supervisor/Manager and step two levels between steward and Supervisor/Manager. 
  • Maintains the company grievance database and prepares reports for SLT as required
  • Conducts research to prepare for collective bargaining and other LR guidance required for RFPs, etc. 
  • Assists in the preparation of cases proceeding to mediation and arbitration 

 

Minimum Hiring Requirements: 

  • Bachelor Degree in Labour Relations, Business or a related field 
  • Minimum 3 years in a related role within a unionized environment
  • Understanding of HR governance, legislation, labour and regulatory environment in order to identify issues and appropriately consult managers and employees
  • Demonstrated business acumen and consultative skills
  • Strong leadership, coaching, facilitation skills 
  • Problem solving skills, ability to determine root cause of complex issues and arrive at sound HR/Business solutions. 
  • Strong investigation and conflict resolution skills 
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, and resourceful.
