Purpose of the Role:

The Labour Relations Consultant will be responsible for advising, educating and supporting managers and supervisors on HR/LR related matters including the consistent interpretation and administration of LifeLabs Collective Agreements and work in collaboration with the Human Resources and Total Rewards teams as well as other internal and external teams and stakeholders to interpret data requirements, develop analytical models and conduct research to support the negotiation of multiple collective agreements and ongoing labour relations work across LifeLabs. In partnership with the HR Business Partners and HR Consultants, this role will also participate in the development and communication of the organization's employee/labour relations policies and programs while promoting a positive employer/employee relationship.

 

Core Accountabilities: 

  • Advises and coaches client groups to assist in resolving employee relations/labour relations matters including consistent interpretation and application of policies, programs and the collective agreement.
  • Supports ongoing training and development activities for managers and supervisors related to Employee/Labour Relations activities.
  • Administers performance management and progressive discipline processes, coaches people leaders in appropriate techniques.
  • Works closely with HRBPs and HRCs to facilitate organizational change by ensuring the Unions are informed of relevant changes.
  • Assists in the development and adaptation of HR/LR training programs as required.
  • Keeps abreast of relevant legislation and legal trends related to Labour Relations and Human Resources. Researches labour relations policies and processes and provides recommendations regarding the enhancement of existing policies or the development of new policies.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with union representatives in BC and ON.
  • Supports and attends Labour Management meetings in BC and ON, prepares and distributes agenda and minutes and supports Operations leadership in providing thorough and timely follow-up to issues raised.
  • Handles grievances at all levels of the grievance procedure. 
  • Maintains the Company's grievance database and prepares reports for SLT as required.
  • Conducts research to prepare for collective bargaining and other LR guidance required for RFPs, etc.
  • Assists in the preparation of cases proceeding to mediation and arbitration.

 

Minimum Hiring Requirements: 

  • College Diploma in HR, LR or Business Administration
  • 3 years working in labour relations with prior experience working in another HR cross-function such as Total Rewards, Benefits, Compensation, HR Systems
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel
  • Experience preparing cost analysis – well developed research, analytical, problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills with the ability to determine root cause of complex issues and arrive at sound HR/Business solutions
  • Strong knowledge of labour relations and awareness of employment related legislation
  • Demonstrated business acumen and consultative skills
  • Strong communication skills, particularly communicating between people with different areas of expertise
  • Willingness to travel occasionally 
  • Requires a valid driver's license
