LifeLabs Medical Laboratory Services is seeking a Medical Lab Technician Genetics to join our team in Toronto, Ontario.

This is an important role in patient care and our business, and will let you see the difference that you make in patients’ lives. This is a Full-time role suitable for an individual with a flexible schedule, and includes the opportunity to pick up additional shifts at other LifeLabs locations.


Job Purpose:

The Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate and efficient receipt of patient specimens from Specimen Management, designating special notes and instructions where applicable, reconciling pending lists and incoming PHL reports, preparing samples for transport to PHL, preparing reagents for RNA extraction and performing automated RNA extractions.  Demonstrates LifeLabs Vision and Values in all activities.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Responsible for carrying out work activities related to COVID-19 specimen receiving; ensure all duties and responsibilities are prioritized and handled with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensure samples are properly heat-inactivated and tracked for processing to maintain required TAT.
  • Accurately receives patient specimens into the computer, updates notes and instructions related to the processing of test results, creates extraction worksheet for MLT.
  • Maintains detailed logs of sample referred to PHL and returned reports.
  • Reconciles pending lists with released results and suspended reports.
  • Assist the MLT to prepare RNA extraction reagents and operate the automated extractor; perform instrument maintenance and QC.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information.
  • Use personal protective equipment (e.g. gloves, lab coats) as specified in EHS procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and orderly work environment.
  • Troubleshoots, problem solves and investigates incidents relating to missing specimens, pending results or other specimen concerns.
  • Has knowledge of MEWS and Intrlab and is able to search for the information required to problem solve.



Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

  • Perform all assigned activities according to current LifeLabs Policies and Procedures including equipment maintenance, quality control, SPP, etc.
  • Follows strict safety practices to ensure they, and their environment, are protected from potential infectious exposure.
  • Recognize discrepancies and incidents, take appropriate action and escalate accordingly.
  • Stay informed and comply with all safety regulations as they relate to the laboratory environment (i.e. WHMIS, TDG, LifeLabs Safety manual, Infection Control).
  • Keep up to date with information shared through different modes of communication (i.e. memos, Policies, Standard Operating Procedures, IntRlab communications, bulletin boards).


Communication/Team work

  • Attend and actively participate in team huddles.
  • Ensure effective communication when dealing with leadership team, support resources, team members.
  • Keep up to date with information shared through the different modes of communication (e.g. memos, LifeLabs websites, updates, bulletin boards).
